FM Shops Enhance Safety for UCLA’s Botanical Garden Visitors

FM’s Masons, Carpenters and Sheet Metal Workers recently provided a huge safety enhancement for visitors of UCLA’s sprawling Botanical Garden.   A steep and crude walkway leading down into the Garden from Tiverton Avenue had deteriorated over time and did not feature any sort of safety handrail, creating a significant fall hazard.   When Garden Director Victoria Sork brought this to FM’s attention, Dave Lamberth, Masons & Roofing Supervisor, went to work assembling the materials and skilled FM Shops resources needed to remedy the situation.   Dave was intimately familiar with this kind

Amidst Pandemic, FM Tradesmen Drive Campus Improvement

Over the past ten months, while much of the UCLA campus community worked remotely during a State-wide Safer-At-Home directive, the majority of the FM team continued to report to campus each day to wield their amazing skills and keep UCLA operational.   This group included the FM Trades, Custodial & Grounds, Material Management, Trouble Call Center, Design & Project Management Project Superintendents, and a small but vital cadre of the other support personnel in and out of FM’s operational units.

Holiday Closure 2020

The campus will again be closing most non-essential campus buildings during the upcoming Winter Holiday period of Saturday, December 19, 2020 through Sunday January 3, 2021. The campus will reopen on Monday January 4, 2021. Selected buildings and facilities identified by the Deans and Vice Chancellors as essential for continuation of needed services will remain open or partially open.

FM Electrical Team Takes Maintenance to New Heights

FM’s Electrical Team recently completed a challenging lighting repair project on the exterior stairwell of the eight-story Broad Art Center. The failed lighting fixtures could only be accessed from the building’s exterior,  requiring the electrical workers to use a large boom truck to reach the extended heights required.

The employees who participated on the project included Lead Electrician Jeremy Atteberry, Facilities Mechanic Xai Yang, Facilities Worker Jason Mair, Facilities Mechanic Norman Lopez and Facilities Worker Roberto Ramirez.

FM Partners with GSEIS to Construct New GIRR in Moore Hall

On March 16, a newly constructed Gender Inclusive Restroom (GIRR) was opened in Moore Hall, the fifth oldest building on the UCLA campus.  This achievement adds to the  inventory of over 300 GIRRs on the UCLA campus!   FM partnered with the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies (GSEIS) to share the cost of constructing the new restroom.   FM would like to extend our sincere thanks to Dean Marcelo M.

FM Improves 25 Classrooms Over Winter Break

During the recent winter break, FM made some very noticeable and much needed improvements to 25 General Assignment Classrooms (GACs) in Public Affairs and Kaplan Hall.   Fifteen GACs in Public Affairs received new furniture (desks/chairs), and the furniture removed from Public Affairs was repurposed to improve ten GACs on the A Level of Kaplan Hall.   These improvements were spearheaded by Maintenance & Alterations Project Manager Daniel Phan, and will be greatly appreciated by our students when they return to classes in January!

Space Inventory Services and Geographic Information Systems Honored with Circle of Excellence Award

Congratulations to Jill Quezada and David Yamamoto who were recognized by Insurance and Risk Management with the Circle of Excellence Award in December 2019. The Circle of Excellence Award is a biannual award to recognize the departments that have contributed significantly to the business continuity capabilities of the University. The space inventory and GIS support provided by Jill Quezada and David Yamamoto assisted the University with preparing for recent Public Safety Power Shut-Offs by identifying the UCLA Facilities in high fire risk areas.

FM Mobile - Harnessing Technology for First-Rate Client Experience

The Advent of FM Mobile

In June 2019, Facilities Management (FM) introduced FM Mobile. The initiative is in response to a 2017 Facilities Assessment and Customer Survey that identified opportunities for a greater degree of communication, reliability and timeliness of projects for FM clients. Client expectations continue to evolve, and as a service-oriented organization, FM has turned to mobile technology to create a seamless experience for end users - FM’s field technicians who have direct contact with clients.

FM Quenches Thirst With Hydration Stations

As part of an initiative to increase bottle-filling capabilities in UCLA campus buildings, Facilities Management (FM) recently kicked off the “25 Thirsty Buildings” project.  This initiative to transition from plastic water bottle usage to tap water is another step to move UCLA closer to zero waste to landfill.

Sunset Canyon Sand Volleyball Courts

Facilities Management’s Design & Project Management (DPM) Division has been asked to build four new NCAA competition level sand volleyball courts in Sunset Canyon Recreation Center for use by the Women’s Sand Volleyball team.  These courts will be used for the NCAA Championship Tournament in May 2020 that will be hosted by UCLA.  Located in the northwest area of Sunset Canyon, DPM is building three new competition courts and one practice court.  Spectator seating will also be provided.

A Smoother Road: Campus Re-paving Projects

This summer, Facilities Management (FM) completed a partial repaving and striping project along Charles Young Drive East from Dickson Court to Tiverton Drive.  The road had deteriorated from the winter storms over the past two years and the regular maintenance to the campus’ underground utilities, and were in desperate need of repaving.  Completed over three half-week phases in late August and early September, the work included scarifying the existing asphalt and re-paving with new asphalt and new striping.  It also included a bike lane on both sides of the roadway.  Project manager Kirk Fi

Summer Classroom Refresh Projects

Facilities Management (FM) collaborated with the Center for the Advancement of Teaching (formerly the Office of Instructional Development) to complete several classroom refresh projects this summer in our continuous efforts to provide quality learning environments for students and faculty. The spaces included two lecture halls and two classrooms in Bunche Hall, two lecture halls in Haines Hall, three small classrooms in Royce Hall and one classroom in Dodd Hall. All of these spaces were in need of upgrades to facilitate improved learning environments.

Book Recycling Program Announced for CHS Complex

A new program has been launched supporting the David Geffen School of Medicine and surrounding medical buildings recycle of unused books and periodicals. The initiative came to life as the UCLA Zero Waste Task Force continues to develop strategies to connect client’s desires to recycle while assisting in diversion goals.

Used Furniture Finds New Life, UCLA Takes Step Toward Zero Waste

Many departments on campus have been storing furniture in hopes that it will find its way to a new home. UCLA Zero Waste Task Force has teamed up with Habitat for Humanity in hopes that unused furniture will find a new life in the community while committing to diversion goals for the University.

FM Completes Outdoor Study Space at La Kretz

In August 2019, Facilities Management completed the latest installment of outdoor study space for the campus. The La Kretz outdoor space located behind four general assignment classroom in the La Kretz Building, is typically filled with students sitting on the concrete floor waiting for the next class period to begin. The project involved the installation of 12 attractive benches in an area that offers wi-fi capability and is under cover from the elements atop the campus’ thermal energy storage tank.

Custodial Gap Coverage Program Created

Facilities Management is pleased to announce the creation and implementation of the Custodial Gap Coverage crew effective Monday, June 17, 2019. In efforts to better service the needs of our customers, the Custodial Division will now support a small team of three custodians who will be able to handle urgent custodial issues from Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Doug Grode Selected As FM’s Director Of Maintenance & Alterations

On January 22nd, 2019, AVC FM Kelly Schmader announced that Doug Grode was selected as FM’s new Director of Maintenance & Alterations (M&A).  Grode has been with UCLA FM for 29 years, starting as an Electrician, moving to Lead Electrician, and ultimately to the Manager of the entire Electric Shop.  In 2008, he was promoted to Deputy Director of M&A, and for the past year, he has served the FM team as M&A’s Interim Director.

One towel is enough – waste reduction and diversion at work

“One towel is enough” stickers are popping up all around campus on all roll towel dispensers in an effort to become a more sustainable campus. “The concept helps to educate our campus community on supporting sustainability by reducing how many paper towels we use to dry our hands after washing them. It’s the small things that count. Especially in this situation where less is truly more,” Director, Custodial and Grounds, Justin Wisor, said. “Reduction of waste is the most important strategy in the solutions hierarchy to achieve Zero Waste.”
