Desk-Side Recycling Program
In June 2008, UCLA implemented a new program called the Desk-Side Recycling Program to recycle ‘mixed paper(s).’ Mixed papers include items such as colored paper, cardboard, newspapers and more.
The Desk-Side campaign currently covers 37 buildings on campus. Buildings in red are currently also part of the single-stream system. Anderson School of Management, Boelter Hall, Broad Art Center, Bunche Hall, Campbell Hall, Capital Programs, CHS Complex, CNSI, Dodd Hall, Engineering IV & V, Facilities Management, Franz Hall, Geology, GSEIS, Haines Hall, Humanities, Kaufman Hall, La Kretz, Life Sciences, Math Sciences, Macgowan Hall, Moore Hall, Murphy Hall, Law School, Perloff Hall, Public Affairs, Rolfe Hall, Royce Hall, Schoenberg, Slichter Hall, Strathmore, Student Activities Center, Terasaki, Wooden Center, Young Hall, and Young Research Library.
Single-stream collection means one bin for all recyclable materials. With technological improvements over the past few years it is now possible to recycle just about everything, and waste haulers can very efficiently separate recyclable materials (paper, plastics, cans, glass, etc.) at their facilities so it is no longer necessary to have separate bins for these items, making recycling more convenient and less confusing. In fiscal year 2010-2011 UCLA recycled over 1750 tons of paper (all types)p, cardboard, bottles, and cans.
Each office is equipped with two small desk-side bins: a blue one for single stream recycling and a grey one for trash with food waste. Our custodial staff is equipped with special cleaning carts which collect the recyclables in separate compartments.
